Shadow is an ex-convict who is set free from jail three days ahead of schedule when his better half Laura is killed in a fender bender. Shadow is crushed by her passing and is troubled to discover that she kicked the bucket close by his dearest companion Robbie, with whom she had been having an illicit relationship.
He accepts a task as a protector for a baffling cheat, Mr. Wednesday, and goes with him across America, visiting Wednesday’s colleagues. Shadow discovers that Wednesday is a manifestation of Odin the All-Father and that he is enlisting American signs of the Old Gods, whose powers have wound down as their adherents have diminished in number, to take part in a fight against the New American Gods, appearances of current life and innovation, like the Internet, media, and present-day method for transport. Shadow meets a leprechaun named Mad Sweeney, who gives Shadow a mystical gold coin after Shadow beats him in a battle.
