Plot

Nineteen-year-old Margaret Hale lived once in 10 years in London with her cousin Edith and her wealthy Aunt Shaw, but while Edith marries Captain Lennox, Margaret returns with her heart to the southern city of Helstone. At the suggestion of Mr. Chime, his old friend from Oxford lives with his little girl and girl in Milton-Norther.

Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (29 September 1810 – 12 November 1865), regularly referred to as Mrs Gaskell, was an English author, biographer and short story essayist. Her books offer a point-by-point picture of the lives of numerous layers of Victorian culture, including poor people, and are important to social students of history just as perusers of writing. Her first novel, Mary Barton, was distributed in 1848.
